15 April 2025 – Stockholm, Sweden: Next-generation concrete quality monitoring with IoT technology
Lujabetong AB, a subsidiary of the Finnish Luja Group and one of Northern Europe's leading ready-mix concrete suppliers, is taking a significant step forward in concrete structure quality control by expanding operations to Sweden.
The collaboration with eGate Smart Building Innovation Oy, which began in Finland in 2022, is now continuing in Sweden, where eGate’s advanced IoT solutions will be deployed at construction sites during spring 2025.
eGate’s solution enables real-time monitoring of concrete temperature and strength through wireless IoT sensors and cloud-based analytics. Developed in Finland, the system monitors and calculates the entire curing process from the first pour to the finished building.
– This technological innovation automates concrete curing monitoring and ensures that the target strength of the structure is always achieved according to specifications, says Sebastian Törner, CEO of Lujabetong AB.
Unified quality control standards across borders
– Our experience with the eGate system in Finland has been very positive, adds Markus Haatainen, head of ready-mix concrete at Lujabetoni. Continuous monitoring of compressive strength now allows us to ensure optimal strength more reliably than ever before.
The expansion to Sweden addresses Lujabetoni’s and the Luja Group’s growing need to unify and standardize quality control processes across markets. The system will be adapted to the specific conditions of Swedish construction sites and Lujabetong’s extensive range of concrete mixes. Additionally, software localization will ensure the solution meets the needs of the Swedish construction industry.
Real-time visibility, improved quality, and legal assurance
– The strength of different concrete mixes develops differently depending on recipes and conditions. Therefore, on-site strength monitoring is essential to ensure quality and safety in construction, Haatainen explains.
eGate’s solution enables real-time tracking via mobile devices, with all curing process data securely stored in the cloud. This gives all parties real-time visibility and a complete data history that provides legal assurance.
– Previously, information about curing was collected from various sources and often only a few measurement points, which meant results were partially based on estimates, says Jarkko Haukijärvi, CEO of eGate Smart Building Innovation Oy. – Now the data collection is automated and real-time, and all parties have continuous access to up-to-date information. Modern data analytics and IoT solutions bring a new level to calculations, and industry pioneers see data-driven decision-making as a strategic advantage.
In Finland, the eGate system has already been used on hundreds of Lujabetoni sites and has replaced traditional temperature measurement methods. In Sweden, the goal is to systematically expand its use nationwide.
– Our aim is to adopt eGate as the standard solution in all customer projects in Sweden, thereby strengthening quality control and delivery reliability across the Luja Group, Törner concludes.
